The Saga of my HP2500CP

x350_big inkjet1 (15K)

So,
Being a surplus gathering kind of guy and photographer I could not resist this (dead) HP2500CP giant inkjet.
I did a little investigation at the component level (no schematic or manual) and found that there was a blown quad darlington (partly used to drive the bail motor)
I was re-installing the board after parts replacement when I noticed the legend on one of the bigger chips:

(look closely at the text on the chip in the center)

I bet it went something like this:

Scene: HP Engineering Area 10:21 PM (only room still lit in the building)
3 engineers working on how to solve a vector resolution problem with only a limited number of on-chip resources and ˝ the required available pins on the chip’s package.

Engineer 1:
If we could only afford to add another giant gate array chip - it would be easy…

Engineer 2:
We’re screwed !

Engineer 3:
I give up! Let’s go have a beer….

Scene next day HP Engineering Area:
All 3 engineers busy at their CAD stations designing away.

(Napkin with notes and block diagrams scribbled on it - Located at the epicenter of activity)

Engineer 1:
What do you think we should call it?

Cheers !
Barry

There's more to come on why the driver blew.....stay tuned. click to enlarge
